Why I ranked NCFM #1
FM/OB boards, Training and Location
Ok, so now that emotions are a little bit more tempered, I thought I would sit down and share a bit more about my Match. I am still in shock if I am being honest but feeling so incredibly grateful to my family and mentors that helped me pull off this dream. Just a 1st generation farm kid who decided to be a doctor!
NCFM is one of the very few FM programs in the country that is OB Fellowship equivalent in 3 years. It is also the only program that has had MULTIPLE people sit for OB boards in addition to the FM boards every year! I love delivering babies and being able to do it while taking care of a WHOLE family, including other children, mom, dad, grandparents, etc and addressing community needs is what is special to me.
As a 2nd year resident, you primarily assist with c-sections and eventually “graduate” to being a primary surgeon on c-sections by your third year. The call schedule is split between all the residents doing the Advanced Maternity Care Track so how much work is determined by how much interest there is and fluctuates year to year. Intern year is all about surviving the learning/work/becoming someone’s actual doctor curve.

The LOCATION! So, I visited Greeley in February, and I LOVED IT! It reminded me of Mexico with so much surrounding farmland of an urban center. There is a lot of growth happening there as well. Construction and infrastructure are being built EVERYWHERE. There is a meat-packing plant, one of the largest in the country, that attracts a lot of young immigrant workers which are the patient population I am most interested in taking care of. I want to make full use of my Spanish and I felt that I could do that on a daily basis here.
I’m scared to leave New Mexico if I am being honest. My whole family is here, and I always thought I would end up at least coming back to New Mexico, but my wife and I really liked Colorado. I can see a future where I live in Colorado instead of New Mexico now which is not something I would have thought possible 3 months ago.
Follow my instagram for updates as I plan to try and be more active at least on my stories there and YouTube video coming soon…
I am making a guide for those interested in applying to FM and I will post it soon.
